Calculate your Success Tax

What is the Success Tax? When you pass and leave your loved ones your assets, they will have to pay a tax on those assets to Revenue Canada. Working with a financial advisor can minimize the impact on your family. Your questions, answered.

Q: What is the difference between a Fee-Based Advisor and a Fee-Only Advisor/Hourly Advisor?
A: A Fee-Based Advisor charges a percentage fee based on the assets they are managing or as a percentage of your Net Worth. These fees can add to massive amounts very quickly and cost you a substantial amount money over your lifetime. For example, on a $1,000,000 account at a 1% fee, you are paying $10,000 a year. A Fee-Only Planner charges similarly to a  Lawyer or Accountant, billing hourly and charging you based on the time they spend working on your file.

Q: Why would I pay a fee for a Financial Plan or Financial Checkup? I get my Financial planning done for free by my Investment Advisor/Insurance Advisor/Bank.
A: People do not often work for free. You may not see the fee charged, but you are likely paying the person doing your planning for you. As of 2017, fees paid to investment advisors are reported. However, this new reporting might not provide the total cost of your fees. It's essential to check with your Financial Planner to determine the total price you are paying. When working with any professional paid a commission, a fee or a bonus based on the assets they manage or the products they sell, there is always a potential for a conflict of interest. That said, there are many great commission and fee-for-service planners and salespeople, but it always helps to have a second opinion.

Q: How long will it take to write and present a Financial Plan?
A: That depends on how complex the plan is and how much preparation work the client is willing to do. Bill provides each hourly client with a detailed fact finder and a list of required documents. If the client provides all this information upfront, he can often produce a plan in as little as 5-10 hours.

Q: Are Bill's hourly fees tax deductible?
A: Unfortunately, they are not. Only Investment Counsel fees are deductible; since Bill does not provide advice on individual investments, his fees are not deductible.

Q: I noticed that Bill offers insurance and is insurance licenced. As an Hourly Financial Planner, will he try and sell me Insurance products?
A: Bill offers a variety of services. Before working with a client, he assesses their needs, providing any Fee-Only financial clients with a written disclosure statement agreeing not to sell any insurance products.
Bill also offers Estate Planning work. For Estate Planning clients, he may recommend complimentary Insurance for a holistic approach to protect his client's assets. Being Insurance Licensed gives him access to behind-the-scenes information and Insurance software; with this, he can provide unbiased hourly advice to his clients considering purchasing Insurance from another insurance advisor.

Q: Bill's rate ranges between $250 to $350 an hour. What is the difference, and what will my rate be?
A: The rate charged depends on the complexity of the planning required. Your rate is disclosed in writing after gathering your information and before planning begins.

Q: I have noticed that other Fee-Only Advisors charge $3,000 to $10,000 for a plan; why is Bill's rate based hourly and not a fixed price?
A: Charging hourly usually results in savings for the client as Bill can create some plans in as little as 5 hours, resulting in a fee as low as $1,250.
